Gerry Apple, vice president of the South Capitol Neighborhood Association, visited the Olympia Police Department this week to hand-deliver thank-you notes from the neighborhood association board to the five volunteers and four police officers who helped direct traffic on Halloween night.

Over 2,000 trick-or-treaters of all ages visited South Capitol neighborhood homes – particularly those on Capitol Way between 18th & 20th. Suffice to say, a lot of candy was handed out. The annual event is very popular, drawing people from neighboring cities and as far away as Centralia.
Officers Watkins, Theis, Pearce & Spithaler and Volunteers Bob, Jeremy, Terri, Lucas and Rick helped people traverse Capitol Way throughout the evening to visit uniquely-decorated homes on both sides of the neighborhood.
Many, boasting over-the-top displays of open graves, skeleton pirates, and hundreds of carved pumpkins, drew large, appreciative crowds and also served as collection stations for donations to the Thurston County Food Bank.
This was the second year that the Olympia Police Department provided officers and volunteers to make the event as safe as possible and fun for everyone. Rebekah Ziesemer, community programs officer for the department, said they plan to do the same next year.
