We want YOU to join Us!

Spring is nearly here (hurray!), which means yardwork and spring cleaning and watching things begin to bloom, but it also means a change in our neighborhood association board membership!

Board members serve two-year terms, and this year, seven of our 16 members have terms ending in June. Some of those seven have decided to run for another term, but, sadly, some have reluctantly chosen not to, so we will be saying adios to them and MANY MANY THANKS for serving.

Our bylaws require us to have at least 10 board members and no more than 20. We like having more than ten because it helps spread the work and allows for greater diversity and more robust discussions.

Some of the positions take more time, some take less – but each is what you make of it. The four officers (president, vice president, secretary, treasurer) have specific duties noted in the bylaws, the at-large members do not. So, you can choose to do more or less, depending on how much time and energy you are able to commit.

Gordon White, Scott Freeman and Nora Hawkins are on the nominating committee to beat the bushes and get candidates. They are required to present any nominees at our annual meeting. However, nominations can also be made from the floor. So, if you like to procrastinate, we have you covered.

We’re really hoping that some of you will decide that now is a good time to join the board. As I said, each term is two years, but you can serve more than one term if you want to, or even leave the board for a time and join again later (a number of folks have done this over the years).

You don’t have to own a home in the neighborhood to serve on the board. Renters are eligible as well and very welcome to join! And the same is true for owners of local businesses. We definitely want your perspectives and ideas for improving the neighborhood, too!

If you want to know more about what serving as a board member entails, please reach out to us by filling out the form on our Contact Us page or sending an email to info@southcapitolneighborhood.org and we will follow-up with you.

June is a few months off. So, there’s still plenty of time to give it some thought.

I do want to add that our association is stronger and better when we have the active support and participation of our neighborhood residents. If you can’t join the board but want to help in some way, please consider joining as a member of the association (it’s free), supporting us by paying voluntary dues to help defray our monthly costs – or both! Neighborhood association members have the added bonus of being able to vote at our annual meeting.

More to come on our annual meeting in June (once we’ve chosen a date) and some fun events we are hoping to host later in the year!
