Judging from the many raffle tickets and nametags we handed out, last Sunday’s BBQ picnic at Lincoln Elementary was the place to be! Neighbors came from both sides of Capitol Way to chow down on hotdogs, hamburgers, veggie burgers and sausages, plus an amazing variety of yummy salads and desserts while Michael Dempster and his band played some great rock & roll classics.
My favorite pastime was sitting at the membership table, waiting for folks to stop by and chat. Second favorite was watching kids do kid things – color, blow bubbles, play on the playground and run around trying out the many toys on the field. (Most popular ones – second year in a row – were the blow-up pool rings.)
We added a few more folks to the neighborhood association (now at 167 members! It’s free to join), some paid their voluntary dues (only $15/year and we greatly appreciate your support!) and everyone who came got a free ticket for a chance to win a $100 gift card from Vic’s Pizzeria.
My table buddy, Kathryn and I got sugar highs from taste-testing some of the homemade desserts (top favorites were a cherry crumble and Abby’s famous mini cupcakes – caramel swirl or a fresh raspberry on top.)
We had a number of organizations share useful information – from the Thurston County Environmental Health and Public Health & Social Services departments, City of Olympia Stormwater Management program, the Northwest Justice Project, Olympia Fire Department, Deschutes Estuary Restoration Project, and there were several electric cars on display, organized by our neighbor Thad Curtz.
The lucky winner of the drawing was Tony Moulton, who impressed us by legibly writing his name on his nametag after it was on his shirt.
Thank you to the neighbors, friends and family who came and those who volunteered, and a grateful thanks to the Olympia City Council and staff who once again approved a grant that helped us advertise and put on this fun event.
