SCNA on Proposal to Allow Businesses in Residential Neighborhoods

The following is submitted by Gordon White, board member of the South Capitol Neighborhood Association (SCNA).

Attached to this post is a letter drafted by a group of South Capitol neighbors  commenting on a city proposal to allow small-scale retail businesses anywhere in residential neighborhoods. The proposal would also eliminate all residential zoning districts in order to enable small-scale businesses in any neighborhood. Members of the Olympia City Council made the proposal at the Land Use and Environment Committee meeting on April 24th. The SCNA Board approved and sent the letter attached here so that our concerns will be considered by the City Council as they consider this proposal.

You can watch the portion of the Land Use and Environment Committee meeting recording on this topic.  The presentation and discussion starts at 1 hour and 22 minutes into the recording and you can fast-forward to that point by clicking and dragging on the progress bar at the bottom of the video image.

Here is our letter commenting on the proposal….
