New Proposed Regulations on Home-Based Businesses

Submitted by: Casey Schaufler, Associate Planner, City of Olympia

Editors note: The City of Olympia is considering changing the rules governing home-based businesses. Home-based businesses are operated by a full-time resident in a residential zone and are restricted by various criteria. This is the first update to the home-based business regulations in many years and follows extensive discussion during the 2025 Comprehensive Plan update. The Planning Commission will hold a public hearing on the proposed new regulations on August 17; see below for details.

The Olympia Planning Commission meeting agenda packet for Monday, August 17, 2026, is available for viewing on the City of Olympia Agendas website (link).

The Planning Commission meeting will begin at 6:30 p.m. in Room 207, online and over the phone. Please note that registration is necessary to attend the meeting virtually. You can register to attend the meeting using this link:
